Understanding Nafs: The Inner Self
Nafs, an Arabic term meaning "self" or "soul," plays a vital role in Islamic spiritual teachings. It represents the human ego, desires, and instincts, often seen as a barrier to spiritual growth. Nafs has three levels: Nafs al-Ammarah (commanding self), which urges toward wrongdoing; Nafs al-Lawwama (self-reproaching self), which feels guilt; and Nafs al-Mutma'inna (peaceful self), achieved through purification and closeness to Allah. Controlling nafs leads to self-discipline and inner harmony.
